In 1992, after studying Mathematics at Vilnius University and graduating from Music and Theatre Academy, Arūnas Matelis established one of the first independent film production companies in Lithuania named studio  "Nominum". Documentaries internationally co-produced by the studio have been awarded in many renowned film festivals as well as successfully broadcast in various countries. 

Documentary films directed by Arūnas Matelis have been selected for many world-wide film festivals such as Cannes (“Directors’ fortnight” and “Critics’ Week”), Rotterdam, Torino, MoMA, Moscow etc. and awarded main prizes in a dozen of prestigious, world-famous documentary festivals.

 

A. Matelis is one of few European film directors who have been honored with arguably the most important US film prize - Director’s Guild of America (DGA) Award. This DGA Achievement Award for the best  Doc in 2006 went to him for his first full length documentary film “Before Flying Back to the Earth”. 

"Before Flying back to the Earth" has received more than 10 prestigious awards among which are "Silver Wolf" at IDFA, "Golden Dove" at Leipzig DOX festival, European Film Academy nomination and others. Moreover, the film has inspired tens of thousands of people for many charity actions (www.Good2Care.com) across the world.

A. Matelis is a member of European Film Academy, a Chairman of Documentary Guild of Lithuanian Filmmakers Union as well as of Lithuanian Selection Committee for Oscars Nomination in "Best Foreign Language Film" category and the head of The Alliance of Auteur Cinema.
